A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
We are verifying images and video shared earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
