The Showrunner Reveals He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
