The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
