New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his triumph in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
