Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
