A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailboats carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and search planes to locate the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine personnel, per a navy statement.

The boats had been projected to arrive in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island

Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country grapples with repeated power outages across the country.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy said.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the island.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" after the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bicycles and provisions.

Broader Political Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from various representatives underscoring the complex state of diplomatic ties.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking official from Cuba insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its command to locate the vessels and guarantee the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
