UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
