This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
