President Signs Bill to Disclose More Jeffrey Epstein Documents Following Period of Opposition

The US leader stated on Wednesday evening that he had signed the legislation resoundingly passed by American lawmakers that instructs the federal justice agency to make public more files concerning Jeffrey Epstein, the late sex offender.

The move follows an extended period of pushback from the president and his supporters in Congress that split his core constituency and generated conflicts with various established backers.

Trump had resisted releasing the Epstein documents, calling the matter a "fabrication" and criticizing those who attempted to publish the records accessible, notwithstanding pledging their disclosure on the political campaign.

But he reversed course in the past few days after it was evident the House of Representatives would pass the bill. The president stated: "Everything is transparent".

The details are unknown what the department will make public in response to the legislation – the measure outlines a range of potential items that must be released, but allows exclusions for specific records.

The measure requires the chief law enforcement officer to make unclassified related documents open for review "in an easily accessible digital format", including every inquiry into Epstein, his colleague Ghislaine Maxwell, travel documentation and travel records, persons mentioned or identified in connection with his offenses, entities that were tied to his exploitation or money operations, exemption arrangements and other plea agreements, organizational messages about legal actions, evidence of his confinement and passing, and information about possible record elimination.

The agency will have one month to turn over the records. The measure includes some exceptions, encompassing deletions of victims' identifying information or individual documents, any depictions of youth molestation, releases that would endanger active investigations or legal cases and depictions of demise or mistreatment.
