Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
