Line of Duty Announced for 7th Series on BBC
The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last season concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to combat corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
