India's capital Awakens to Toxic Pollution After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" range.
Extremely High Pollution Readings
Several parts of Delhi registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to ten times the recommended threshold recommended by the WHO.
Particular areas, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x exceeding acceptable limits.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that covers the city as the cold season begins.
Yet in recent months, the newly elected regional government petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Court Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Effects
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Around Diwali, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak records ever documented in Beijing, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Various Contamination Contributors
The problem in the city is attributed to a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, garbage fires and smoke from farm burning in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air arrives.
Medical and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous studies.
The contaminated air causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.
The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths annually in the city.
