California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yes, I would be lying if I said no," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

Newsom's time in office as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent adversary of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and championing a proposition that would expand the party's representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the power to issue trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, following a this week's tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented trucker that caused three deaths and casualties.

Newsom's office noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment multiple times, which allowed him to receive a CDL under national regulations.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was holding back $40 million from California for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Team

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a recent comment responding to the funding warnings. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters said that Newsom should run for president in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
